With around 1,000 known cases, Graubünden was a "hotspot" for witch persecution. In all judicial communities of the Three Leagues state, people were tried and executed for witchcraft, especially after 1650 - a time when witch persecution was on the decline in the rest of Europe.
Antonia Bertschinger gives an overview of what happened and explains the course and peculiarities of the Graubünden witch hunt. One focus is on the Upper Engadine, an area with an extremely poor source material. Why are there no sources for the Upper Engadine, and what can we still know about the persecution here?
