For the 14th time, the Symphonic Brass Project will give a concert in St. Moritz. The program features concert band music from various stylistic periods, including works by Byrd, Wagner, McBeths, Huber, and Bruckner. The audience will be treated to a diverse range of sounds, from sacred melodies and rhythmic passages to a rich symphonic sound. The project has been under the musical direction of the Swiss conductor and composer Thomas Trachsel for the past thirteen years.

Symphonic Brass Project 2026:

To conclude this year's rehearsal days in St. Moritz, the Symphonic Brass Project 2026, under the direction of Thomas Trachsel, presents an entertaining concert with varied works from different stylistic periods for large brass ensemble and percussion.

The program opens with the «First Elizabethan Suite» of the English Renaissance composer William Byrd (1540-1623). The suite consists of historical Elizabethan dances and pieces. The movements performed are The Earle of Oxford's Marche, Wolsey's Wilde, Callino Casturame, and The Bells.

The following festive «Prelude from The Mastersingers of Nuremberg» from Richard Wagner (1813-1883) is the prelude to his world-famous opera. Majestic, broad sounds describe the Mastersingers' theme, march-like rhythms the guild theme, and quick, light runs the lively motif of the apprentices.

The well-known «Kaddish» by the American composer William Francis McBeth (1933-2012), on the other hand, is a deeply emotional work of art, which he wrote as a musical tribute to his teacher. A striking timpani stroke, imitating a pulse, runs like a thread through the work, symbolizing the triumph of life over death.

The "«Suite for brass instruments and percussion» from the Swiss Paul Huber (1918-2001) was premiered in 1980 on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the St. Gallen Cantonal Teachers' Association. It is considered one of his most important chamber music compositions. The movements Fanfara, Entrate die Professori, Disputazione, Ricreazione and Marcia finale reflect Huber's typical, powerful musical language and his rhythmic precision.

The concert program is rounded off with the «"Scherzo"» from the 4th Symphony by Anton Bruckner (1824-1896). It is characterized by rustic power, dance-like elements, and tremendous dynamic force. A wonderful conclusion to this year's concert project.
