Johannes Schlaefli, director

Benjamin Engeli, piano

The SJSO as a springboard: The list of musicians who have benefited from the SJSO's support in launching successful careers is long. Benjamin Engeli performs with orchestras such as the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra of Moscow, and the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich, but is particularly passionate about chamber music: as a member of the Tecchler Trios He won the ARD Music Competition in Munich in 2007, and is now a sought-after musical partner for his professional colleagues worldwide.

Johannes Schlaefli also once played oboe in the SJSO as a young musician and even conducted the orchestra on a tour back then. His conducting career has made him one of the most internationally renowned instructors. In Richard Strauss's highly virtuosic tone poems, Schlaefli and the entire SJSO can showcase all their strengths. Together with the two works by Rachmaninoff and Rossini, this results in a rich and inspiring concert program (even by SJSO standards).
