Yumi Ito creates worlds beyond all boundaries with her voice. The Swiss singer of Polish and Japanese descent is considered one of the most outstanding exponents of vocal improvisation and moves effortlessly between genres and her activities as a singer, pianist, and composer. Ito's own music is correspondingly diverse, a veritable ocean of art pop, jazz, and neoclassical music. Drawing on countless concerts and tours, the musician performs like a Zen master, clear, reflective, and with a uniquely powerful energy. Milestones have included performances at the Blue Note New York and the Montreux Jazz Festival, tours in Asia, South America, and Europe, as well as five albums as a bandleader, most recently the internationally acclaimed Ysla (2023 via enja yellowbird records). Yumi Ito regularly plays sold-out concerts at renowned festivals such as the JazzArt Festival (Poland), Veneto Jazz Festival (Italy), Akbank Jazz Festival (Turkey), Euro-Venezuelan Jazz Festival (Venezuela), and ZOA Festival (Austria). The prizewinner of the Montreux Jazz Vocal Competition has been selected for the Focus Year program under Wolfgang Muthspiel at the Jazzcampus Basel (2017–2018), received Priority Jazz Funding from Pro Helvetia (2022–2024), and, with her band, impressed the Jazzahead jury, which unanimously nominated her for a showcase appearance at Jazzahead (2024). Yumi Ito performs solo or with a band, which includes "drum poet" Iago Fernández, double bassist Nadav Erlich, and guitarist Alessio Cazzetta. Always in focus: the creation of musical worlds in the spirit of boundlessness.
