The Swiss Youth Symphony Orchestra is an orchestra of a special kind: up to a hundred young musicians between the ages of 15 and 25 come together from all four parts of Switzerland and perform demanding works from all of them under the direction of internationally renowned conductors epochs of classical music.

In the rehearsals and at the concert performances, the talented young people gain important experience in playing in an orchestra, which has a decisive influence on the further course of their musical career. Many of the former SJSO members are now engaged in renowned professional orchestras. Due to the multilingualism, bridges are also built between the individual cultures of Switzerland.

Romantic Wealth

They were the celebrated stars of their respective generation of composers: Mozart, Rossini, Mendelssohn. All of them were highly talented and accomplished at an early age, and for all of them, success proved to be exhausting. Only Rossini managed to work-life balance to save him in time: At the age when Mozart and Mendelssohn died, he went into early retirement – and wrote almost nothing. Fortunately, only almost nothing: A few years ago, a wonderful bassoon concerto from that period was discovered, probably composed by him, which the exceptional Swiss bassoonist Valeria Curti will perform with the SJSO. It offers something singable and lively, but also something sensitive and dark.

It is precisely this last quality - the ability to portray the dark, the frightening and the profound in music - that is one of Mozart's achievements. Without his "Don Giovanni" overture, musical romanticism would be unthinkable. A pinnacle of this romanticism is Mendelssohn's A minor symphony. Known today as the "Scottish", it is so much more than just a landscape depiction: rarely has music been composed that is so artfully crafted and yet so poetic. An underestimated masterpiece - and a great challenge for any orchestra. The SJSO is happy to take it on!
