The modern approach to the Alpine glaciers is first and foremost a visual one. In the Engadin, this is particularly true of the Morteratsch Glacier, which has been an attraction since the advent of tourism in the second half of the 19th century. The input presentation focuses on various perspectives that have shaped the perception of the Morteratsch Glacier from 1740 to the present day. It was then that the first foreigners began to take an interest in the glacier and to walk on it, measure it, describe it and also depict it. Here, the views of scientists and mountaineers in the 18th and 19th centuries are of interest, and later those of tourists who look at the Morteratsch from Piz Languard, from the pass road and from the moving train. Added to this are the views of the army during the Second World War, as well as those from the airplane. And currently, the virtual view into a world without glaciers at the end of the 21st century is formative. These and other glacier views are illustrated with text, photos and film.
The speaker, Jann Duri Bantli, is working on a cultural studies doctoral thesis on the perception of glaciers in the Bernina and Tödi regions between 1740 and the present. The research project is institutionally supported by the Uri Institute for Alpine Cultures (Altdorf) and the Institute for Cultural Research Graubünden (Chur).
The subsequent discussion will be moderated by Dr. Mirella Carbone, research associate at ikg Sils.
