Symphonic Brass Project 2025:
To conclude this year's rehearsal days in St. Moritz, the Symphonic Brass Project 2025, under the direction of Thomas Trachsel, presents an entertaining concert with varied works from different stylistic periods for large brass ensemble and percussion.
The program opens with the «Vespro della Beata Vergine», also known as the Vespers of the Blessed Virgin Mary by the Italian composer Claudio Monteverdi (1567-1643). This sacred work from 1610 is considered one of the most important early Baroque compositions. Five movements from it will be performed in an instrumentation for brass instruments. By the contemporary American composer John Mackey (*1973) two works are on the program. The »Fanfare for Full Fathom Five» It takes its title from Shakespeare's "The Tempest," whose text refers to a shipwreck at a depth of approximately five fathoms (9 meters). Traditional fanfare rhythms are blended with a whirlwind of stormy dissonances and various keys before the piece reaches a triumphant conclusion. «"Hymn to a Blue Hour"» Mackey captures the lingering twilight of the "blue hour," the time between sunset and complete darkness. Premiering in 2010, the piece is characterized by a combination of nostalgic melancholy and hopeful optimism, emerging from three recurring musical motifs.
The Austrian composer and musician Karl Pilss (1902-1992) wrote his «Heroic Lament» in 1934, born out of enthusiasm for the Vienna City Trumpet Choir, a traditional ensemble that originated in 1925 and is known for its performances at festivals and the New Year's Concert from the Vienna City Hall tower. With the following piece «Divertissement» the American composer Lynden De Young (1923-2009) created a composition that is both rhythmically and melodically surprising and is even said to have won a prize for it in 1951. The spirited conclusion of the concert evening consists of four scenes from the opera «Maria de Buenos Aires» from Astor Piazzolla (1913-1992). With Yo Soi Maria, Balada, Habanera and Fuga Y Misterio, we can expect music that combines the most diverse styles of tango as well as its forerunners Milonga and Canyengue; in addition, a fugue, toccata or oratorio-like parts are incorporated into the operetta, which merge with cabaret, ballet and the fiery rhythms.
The brass ensemble Symphonic Brass Project 2025 is looking forward to the upcoming concerts and cordially invites you to attend.
