wed25Sep20:30Weather forecasts for the Engadin – origins and challengesNATURAMA lecture by Yves Karrer, MeteoSwiss

Event details

On every trip into nature, the topic of weather inevitably accompanies us.
As a forecaster at MeteoSwiss, Yves Karrer knows the fascinating and varied world of weather all too well. In his talk, he gives us an insight into the creation of weather forecasts at MeteoSwiss, the Federal Office of Meteorology and Climatology. He focuses on the forecasts for the national park region. This area presents a particular challenge for meteorologists: the complex topography of the Alps has a strong influence on the weather. Inner-Alpine dry valleys such as the Engadin are particularly difficult to crack. Even supercomputers, high-resolution models and sophisticated methods such as artificial intelligence reach their limits here.
