Yes, the world is beautiful – especially here in the mountains on a wonderful summer afternoon! The famous operetta composer Franz Lehar was a real fan of Switzerland, not least because he spent his final years here. It is therefore probably no coincidence that he set the action of one of his most beautiful and challenging operettas in Switzerland. The first and third acts of this – unfortunately very rarely performed – work take place in the lobby of a hotel in the Swiss Alps: we are therefore right there on the scene. In the second act, things get dramatic – and this is where Lehar wrote one of his most interesting scores: it is set in a rock face! The story is about people who would like to break out of their social conventions and hide from them – and where better to do that than in the
Switzerland, where celebrities are discreetly left alone? In the end, the right people find themselves – conventions notwithstanding. It's a beautiful world!
