French music on the spring tour: Together with Swiss cellist Samuel Niederhauser, the SJSO will perform Camille Saint-Saëns' Cello Concerto No. 1. Before that, the program features music by a pioneering artist: Lili Boulanger, the first woman to win the most prestigious French composition prize of the time in 1913, died five years later at the age of only 24. Her orchestral works were composed when it was already clear that she did not have long to live. D'un matin de printemps (On a spring morning) and D'un soir triste (From a sad evening onwards), which complement each other like light and shadow. Claude Debussy spent the summers of his childhood in Cannes – from these memories he later created what is probably the most famous «sea study» in music history: La Mer.
